This special event features 3rd–5th grade students running their own small businesses . Each student has created a product, set their prices, and will be selling to real customers in a supportive, community-centered environment.

This is more than just a fair. It’s a hands-on learning experience where students build confidence, creativity, and real-world skills.

5th Grade Yearbook Cover Design Contest

We’re excited to invite all 5th grade students to participate in this year’s Yearbook Cover Design Contest !

This is a special opportunity for students to showcase their creativity and leave a lasting mark on their final year at Emerald Elementary. One winning design will be selected as the official front cover of the 2025–2026 yearbook, with additional designs featured inside.

Contest Guidelines

To ensure all entries can be considered for printing, please follow these requirements:

Designs must be created on standard 8.5" x 11" paper (vertical orientation)
Artwork must be 100% original No tracing
No clipart
No AI-generated images
One entry per student
Each design must include:
Emerald Elementary School
2025–2026

Students should not write their name on their artwork. A submission form will be attached instead.

Tips for a Strong Design

Encourage your student to think about what makes Emerald Elementary special. Strong designs often include:

School memories, activities, or traditions
Elements that represent our school community
Creative use of bold, bright colors

A few practical tips to keep in mind:

Keep important artwork at least ½ inch from the edges to prevent it from being cut off during printing
Use materials like markers, colored pencils, or crayons for the best results
Most importantly, let their personality shine through

Do you have a 3rd, 4th, or 5th grader who loves to create, design, or come up with big ideas?

The Emerald Student Business Fair is coming on Friday, April 24, 2026 , and we are now accepting applications.

This special event gives students the opportunity to design, launch, and run their own small business in a supportive school environment. Students will create an original product, set their prices, and sell to real customers during the event.

This is not a competition. It is a hands-on learning experience focused on creativity, problem-solving, responsibility, and confidence. Participation is free!

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a fundraiser for PTO?

No. The Student Business Fair is designed as a learning experience. The goal is creativity, effort, and real-world skill development.

Does my child need to be “crafty” to participate?

No. Students simply need to create, design, or meaningfully transform what they are selling. This is about entrepreneurship, not just crafting.

Can students sell food?

No. Food and beverage items are not permitted.

Do parents need to attend?

Yes. A parent or guardian must supervise their student for the entire event, including setup and take down.

What if multiple students apply with similar ideas?

The review committee may limit similar businesses to ensure variety.

What if my child sells out early?

Students are expected to remain for the full event duration. Selling out is part of the learning experience.

OMSI Night

Get ready for an evening of hands-on science, curiosity, and discovery. We are bringing the spirit of Oregon Museum of Science and Industry right to our school for a special OMSI Night designed for the whole family.

This is not a sit-and-watch kind of event. OMSI Night is all about exploring, experimenting, and figuring things out together. Throughout the school, you will find interactive stations filled with real science equipment and engaging challenges. Some activities will click instantly. Others might stump you at first. That is part of the fun.

Kids will get to test ideas, make predictions, and try again when things do not work the first time. Adults might find themselves just as curious and occasionally just as perplexed. It is one of those nights where learning feels playful and shared, not instructional or pressured.

If you have children in multiple grade levels, come at the time that works best for your family. You are welcome to choose the window that feels the most comfortable and enjoyable for your crew.

You do not need any science background to enjoy this night. Asking questions, trying things out, and laughing when something surprises you is exactly the point. OMSI Night is about experiencing science as something approachable, creative, and fun.

This event is a great chance to spend time together, see classmates outside the classroom, and remind kids that learning can happen anywhere, especially when it feels like play.

Emerald Spirit Wear On Sale Now

Thanks for your patience while we’ve been working on this year’s spirit wear. We ran into an unexpected delay with our previous vendor and were unable to move forward as planned. We know families have been waiting, especially students who are new to our school this year, so we’ve shifted gears to get shirts into kids’ hands more quickly.

We are opening a short showroom window with one classic logo option, so orders can be processed fast. You will still have several options for shirt color and type.

Online orders Due by December 28th. The products will be delivered to the school the week of January 19th.

This quick sale is to give everyone a chance to have a school shirt without as long a wait. After winter break, we will open the full spirit wear showroom again with more styles and options.

Thanks for bearing with us while we got this sorted out. We are excited to get spirit wear going again and appreciate your support.

Note: Orders are processed through a third-party vendor and completed off site.

A Book for Every Otter!

This year, EVERY Emerald Otter will get to take home at least one book!

Each student will receive a Book Fair Bonus Coupon from their teacher to redeem for one book (up to $7 in value). To make it easy, our volunteers will add small green dot stickers to eligible books.

When students visit the fair, they’ll simply:

Find a book with a �� green dot,
Take it and their coupon to checkout, and
Redeem it for free!

There is a wide variety of books available so every child can find something they truly enjoy.

This schoolwide literacy initiative exists because of the effort our students put into fundraising. From the Fun Run to the Book Fair, every dollar raised and every Scholastic Dollar earned is turned into something meaningful for them. We’re proud to use those funds to place real books into the hands of every student.

Cocoa and Caring is back, and we’re excited to welcome families for a warm and meaningful evening together. This annual event is free for all Emerald students and their families.

Kids can sip cocoa, enjoy cookies, create cheerful cards for residents in our local assisted living homes, listen to stories read aloud by Emerald teachers, and shop the Book Fair during their session. It is a simple, cozy way to pause during a busy season and connect with our school community.

Support Our Community

If you are able, we are collecting donations to restock our health room and support families through the Family and Community Resource Center.

Volunteers Needed

Events like this only happen because of our amazing parent community. We need several volunteers during each session to serve cocoa, keep the craft tables stocked, help with cleanup, and support the Book Fair. If you can lend a hand, even for one shift, it makes a real difference.

Volunteers also receive five dollars in Book Fair credit for each shift they fill.

Help Feed Our Community: The Hungry Otter Food Drive

Our annual Hungry Otter Food Drive runs December 1–5 , and this year we’re focusing on helping families right here in our own community. All food collected will go to the Family & Community Resource Center (FCRC) to support Emerald students and families in need.

Students can bring donations to school anytime during the week and place them in the collection bins on campus. You can also bring items to Cocoa & Caring on Thursday, December 4 , where we’ll have a clearly marked donation barrel ready to fill!

Every item helps make a difference. The FCRC especially appreciates donations that are kid-friendly, easy to prepare, and shelf stable.

Here are some ideas of what to donate:

Cereal, instant oatmeal, and granola bars
Mac & cheese, instant noodles, and pasta with sauce
Peanut butter and jelly
Canned soups, fruits, and vegetables
Canned tuna, chicken, or chili
Rice, boxed meals, and instant potatoes
Snack packs, applesauce cups, and fruit cups
Crackers, trail mix, and breakfast bars
Shelf-stable milk and juice boxes

The Scholastic Book Fair Is Coming Soon!

Get ready to celebrate reading, because our annual Scholastic Book Fair is almost here!

December 1-5, 2025

The fair is always one of our favorite events of the year, a chance for students to discover new stories, explore their favorite series, and get excited about books.

Preview Days: Monday, December 1 & Tuesday, December 2, 8 am–2 pm

Open for Shopping:

Wednesday, December 3, 8 am–1:30 pm
Thursday, December 4, 8 am–3:30 pm and during Cocoa & Caring (5:00–7 pm)

We’ll also keep the fair open one hour after school on shopping days so families can stop by together.

We Need Volunteers to Make the Magic Happen!

Proposed Bylaw Updates – Vote on December 2

At our November 4 meeting, the Emerald PTO presented several proposed updates to our bylaws. These updates were introduced for member review and will be voted on at our next meeting: Tuesday , December 2, at 5:30 p.m.

All members are encouraged to attend and participate in the vote! These updates aim to strengthen transparency, clarify financial policies, and ensure our mission reflects our inclusive school community.

Summary of Proposed Changes

1. Updated Mission Statement (Article I, Section 3)
Adds a statement affirming our commitment to inclusivity:

“The PTO is committed to an inclusive environment where all families and staff are welcome regardless of race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, or disability.”

2. Officer Attendance & Participation (New Article III, Section 4)
Establishes expectations for officer participation:

Officers are expected to attend scheduled Board meetings or submit updates in advance. Three or more unexcused absences may be considered a failure to fulfill duties.

3. Electronic Voting Between Meetings (Article IV)
Allows the Executive Board to vote electronically between meetings for urgent matters, with all votes recorded in the next meeting’s minutes.

4. Revised Financial Policy (Article VI)
Completely rewritten for clarity on how funds are used and how reserves are managed:

Fundraising efforts will align with the PTO’s mission and benefit Emerald students, staff, and community during the same school year whenever possible.
The number and type of fundraisers may vary each year, as determined by the Executive Board and approved by membership. (This replaces the previous limit of two fundraisers per year.)
The PTO may maintain an operating reserve of 20–30% of the previous year’s expenditures for stability.
Funds may be earmarked from the prior year’s balance for early-year events like the Fun Run.
Unused funds beyond the reserve limit must be used to benefit students or staff within the following fiscal year.
Money raised for specific projects (e.g., playground or technology improvements) will be tracked separately and used only for that purpose unless members approve otherwise.

5. Banking and Reporting Updates
Adds provisions f or electronic payments and a year-end treasurer’s report .

6. New Conflict of Interest Policy (New Article VIII)
Introduces a clear policy ensuring decisions are made in the best interest of the PTO and school community.

These proposed updates were presented according to our bylaws and will be voted on by the membership at the December 2 meeting .

Fun Run Success - Thank You, Emerald Families!

Our 2025 Fun Run was an incredible success, and it’s all thanks to YOU! With your generosity and enthusiasm, we raised just over $16,000 — surpassing our school goal! Donations came in from 26 different states , showing just how far our Emerald community reaches.

A huge thank you to Angela Gates for coordinating this year’s event. Her organization, energy, and creativity made the day run smoothly from start to finish. We’re also deeply grateful to all of the volunteers who helped with setup, passing out waters and Otter Pops, cheering, cleanup, and everything in between. We couldn’t do it without you!

Get ready for a wild and unforgettable evening! Richard “The Oregon Reptile Man” will be visiting Emerald Elementary on Friday, November 6 , bringing along some of his amazing reptile friends for an exciting, hands-on learning experience.

Schedule:

K–2nd Grade: 5:00–5:45 PM
3rd–5th Grade: 6:00–6:45 PM

Please come during your student’s scheduled time so all students get a chance to see the animals. Have students in multiple grades? Come whenever works best for your family!

All students attending must be accompanied by an adult.

Since 1991, The Oregon Reptile Man has been traveling across the Pacific Northwest, sharing his love and knowledge of reptiles with over 400 organizations each year. His mission is to spark curiosity and compassion by helping children (and adults!) experience these fascinating creatures up close.

As Richard says:

“If we remove live animals from humans’ consciousness, eyes, and other senses, animals will eventually be removed from the earth as well. For love, respect, compassion, and knowledge rises from such experiences, and continues to evolve into conservation efforts in all its various forms.”

This special evening is made possible by the Emerald PTO , with funds raised through our community events and fundraisers. Thank you for helping us bring enrichment opportunities like this to our students!

Emerald is celebrating Spirit Week from October 27-31 , building excitement all week long for our big Fun Run on Thursday!

Each day has a fun theme to help our students and staff get into the spirit:

Monday – Pajama Day

Start the week cozy and comfy! Wear your favorite pajamas to school.

Tuesday – Dress Fancy

Break out your best outfit - time to dress to impress!

Wednesday – Wacky Wednesday

Get silly with your style! Think mismatched clothes, wild hair, crazy socks—let your creativity shine.

The Fun Run is back , and it’s our biggest and most important fundraiser of the year! This event brings our students, families, and staff together for a day of movement, laughter, and school spirit, all while raising money for the programs that make Emerald thrive.

Our Kickoff Assembly is Wednesday, October 15th , and that’s when the fun officially begins! Students will start collecting pledges, earning prizes, and getting excited for the big event.

Then on Thursday, October 30th , we’ll all come together on the Emerald field for the Fun Run! Families are invited to come cheer from the sidelines and celebrate every lap.

About the Program

This year, Emerald Elementary is raising $12,000 to support:

How the Fundraiser Works

Each student collects pledges or donations from family and friends. Sponsors can pledge a flat amount or an amount per lap completed during the event.

After the Fun Run, students report their laps, and donations are collected online or through pledge envelopes sent home.

Funds raised help our PTO continue providing the extras that make Emerald such a special place to learn and grow,

On the day of the Fun Run, be sure to dress your student up in the grade's designated colors:

Missoula Children’s Theatre is Coming to Emerald and We Need Your Help!

We are excited to announce that the Missoula Children’s Theatre (MCT) will be bringing their traveling production to Emerald Elementary this year! In just one week, two professional directors will guide our students from auditions to a full-scale performance, complete with costumes, sets, and music.

This program is always a favorite—it gives students a chance to try something new, build confidence, and shine on stage.

What is Missoula Children’s Theatre?

MCT is the nation’s largest touring children’s theatre, and they do something truly unique: in just one week, two professional actor/directors arrive with a set, costumes, props, and a script—and transform our students into a full stage production. They guide kids through the process of auditioning, rehearsing, and performing, all while teaching teamwork, creativity, and confidence.

Why It’s Special for Emerald

This program gives our students the chance to shine in a way that’s different from the classroom. Some kids discover a love of acting, while others find joy behind the scenes helping with stage direction or technical roles. The experience builds public speaking skills, boosts confidence, and helps kids feel proud of their school community. Best of all, every child who auditions has a role, whether big or small.

Performance Details

Auditions: Monday, October 20, 2025 | After School

Rehearsals: Held daily after school, the week of the show

Two Final Performances: Saturday, October 25, 2025, 1:00 pm & 3:30 pm, at Emerald

Families and friends are invited to join us for the final performances; it’s always a highlight of the school year!

But to make it happen, we need your help!

This event runs on community support, and there are lots of ways to pitch in:

Assisting with rehearsals and student supervision
Supporting set-up and clean-up on performance day
Spreading the word and filling the audience

Whether you have an hour or a whole afternoon, your help makes a big difference in bringing this magical experience to our kids.

What better way to kick off the school year than with popsicles and play? Join us for Popsicles on the Playground, a fun and casual get-together hosted by the Emerald Elementary PTO.

This event is all about welcoming families back to school, meeting new friends, and reconnecting after the summer. Kids can run, play, and enjoy a sweet treat while parents and guardians catch up with one another and get to know the PTO.

There’s no agenda, just time to relax, build community, and celebrate the start of a new year together. Whether you’re brand new to Emerald or a returning family, this is a perfect chance to connect.
